Enthusiasm for most forms of cryptocurrency slackened during an eventful 2022 but several jurisdictions, including the EU and UK, have moved nearer to introducing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in recent months. Proponents say CBDCs deploy advanced tech without the risks associated with commercial crypto-tokens and bolster financial systems against inroads by Big Tech payments firms. Others, however, see CBDCs as having the potential to become Big Brother, intruding on privacy.
