Find Facts Fast Accelerates Internal Investigation for Canadian Company
Situation
A Canadian corporation set out to conduct an internal investigation after senior executives grew aware of suspicious activity within one of its business groups. The company did not know where or how to begin the investigation, but speed and discretion were paramount. As a result, FTI Technology and its Find Facts Fast research team were selected to lead the matter.
Our Role
The FTI team collected and processed more than 1 million documents potentially related to the matter, then uploaded the materials into FTI’s Canadian instance of the RelativityOne e-discovery platform. Upon discussing strategies for legal review, the company’s law firm expressed a strong preference for conducting a traditional review using keyword searches. Yet given the parameters of the matter, the FTI team believed that machine learning could be more effective at finding and prioritizing important documents.
To this end, the FTI team conducted a side-by-side test. For the first process, FTI’s managed review team in Canada used keywords developed by the law firm, supplementing them with additional keywords. Concurrently, the managed review team developed a Continuous Multi-Modal Learning (CMML) model, leveraging Relativity and an integrated Brainspace platform. After the model was built, it was run against the data set which did not contain keywords. The model predicated that an additional 50,000 documents not containing keyword hits were relevant to the proceedings.
With the law firm’s permission, the managed review team reviewed 9,000 of the 50,000 documents ranked as highly relevant. The managed review team then conducted a first pass review of the 9,000 documents highlighted by Brainspace and confirmed that 87% of those documents were responsive.
Our Impact
Due to FTI’s expertise with machine learning and CMML, the process was fast, thorough, and defensible. Nearly 8,000 responsive documents were reviewed and produced using CMML, which otherwise would have been missed using keyword searches. As a result of this process, the client was extremely happy with the results and of FTI’s innovative and problem-solving approach to the investigation.
