IQ.AI Provides Training for Technology Assisted Review Model, Enabling Rapid Insight Across Production of 3 Million Documents in Antitrust Litigation
Ahead of depositions, attorneys needed to analyze and review a production of approximately 3 million documents to prepare for questioning and case strategy. FTI Technology brought a combination of e-discovery and antitrust expertise alongside use of its IQ.AI by FTI Technology solutions to help the client overcome time and cost constraints.
Situation
The legal team needed to conduct a responsive review and prioritization of documents to help develop strategy and deeper understanding of the case ahead of depositions. However, a traditional linear review was infeasible, and a technology-assisted review workflow would have required an estimated more than 200 attorney hours to train the model for review, which was also not realistic given budgets and timelines. Under intense time pressure, the legal team required an innovative approach that would provide insights and inform the case, while side-stepping the process of training a traditional model or conducting manual review.
The client was also looking to reduce its hosting footprint and identify documents that were irrelevant to the matter so they could be removed from hosting.
Our Role
The legal team expressed openness to experimenting with generative artificial intelligence to address document challenges. FTI Technology designed a workflow to use IQ.AI for Review to code the documents on behalf of the attorneys, based on the legal team’s prior work product. Those coding decisions were then used to train the technology assisted review model for full review and prioritization.
FTI Technology’s platform agnostic approach and technical fluency to work across numerous systems in parallel were crucial, making it possible to meet the client where they were with their challenges and tools, while still delivering a powerful AI-based solution.
Throughout the engagement, FTI Technology provided:
- A customized prompt within IQ.AI, leveraging the legal team’s previous work to accurately code 3 million documents and train the analytic model for review.
- Executive summaries of the AI-coded results for attorneys to examine, enabling quality control and to ensure alignment of IQ.AI’s output with the attorneys input, to better meet the needs of the case.
- Numerous iterations to ensure stability in the technology assisted review model, following accepted industry standards to narrow the document population and enable accurate, efficient, targeted searching for time-pressured deposition preparation.
- Concurrent workflows and process integration for subject matter experts to review coded control sets while IQ.AI continued to handle training rounds.
- Monitoring of performance metrics to determine optimal review cutoff points.
- Documentation of the methodology to the client to support transparency and confidence.
Our Impact
With IQ.AI, FTI Technology aligned large language models with established decision-making processes to create a novel AI-powered system for model training while minimizing attorney review time. The solution and outputs were delivered in a matter of weeks, providing the attorneys with enough runway to adequately prepare for depositions.
Estimated savings of more than $100,000 by eliminating up to 250 attorney hours that would have been required to review documents for technology assisted review model training. Time savings also supported the legal team in focusing exclusively on high-value analytical work to strengthen case strategy.
Enabled earlier review cutoff with acceptable model precision and maintained full auditability of the entire process.
